The ladder leading Western Sydney Wanderers face their toughest test of the NPL NSW season far when they host Blacktown City at Wanderers Football Park on Sunday afternoon.
The Wanderers are flying high, winning an incredible seven matches in a row to be four points clear of the rest of the competition after a third of the season.
Last weekend’s match against St George City saw them record their biggest win of the season, as five first half goals paved the way for a 6-1 demolition of their opponents.
Coach Andrew Christiansen will be further pleased by the fact there were six different goalscorers on the weekend, with Marcus Younis having a standout performance with a goal and three assists.
The Wanderers have amassed an astonishing 38 goals so far this season, and their defence has also shown improvement in the last month with just three goals conceded in the last four games.
That defence will be put to the test against Blacktown, who have the second best attack in the competition, and are looking in ominous form in recent weeks.
Blacktown had an inconsistent start to the season, winning just two of their opening five matches, but four wins in five matches have seen the side shoot up to fourth on the table with 21 points.
They have attacking weapons all over the pitch, with Jak O’Brien having nine goals so far this season, whilst Mitch Mallia, Joey Gibbs and Travis Major chipping in with five each.
They also got the better of the Red and Black in the head-to-head battles between the sides last season, with Blacktown recording a come from behind victory at Wanderers Football Park early in the year, before the sides played out a 0-0 draw in the return fixture.
With both sides attacks in fine form, don’t expect a similar scoreline on Sunday.
