The Western Sydney Wanderers NPL Women side will look to extend their unbeaten start to the season when they face Hills United FC at Valentine Sports Park on Sunday night.
After taking four points from their opening two away fixtures, Jamie Dib’s side travel into Round 3 with growing confidence following an opening-round victory over the Illawarra Stingrays and a hard fought 2-2 draw against UNSW FC last weekend.
The Wanderers again showed strong character at The Village Green, recovering late through Alyssa McKenzie’s 89th minute equaliser after the winger had already helped create Mia Nataly’s first-half opener.
McKenzie’s impact after entering earlier than expected through injury once again highlighted her ability to shift momentum, with her direct running and attacking instinct proving decisive in the closing stages.
This weekend presents another away challenge against a Hills United side still adjusting to life in the top flight butalready showing signs they can compete. The newly promoted side opened their campaign with an encouraging draw against Macarthur Bulls FC before suffering a 2-0 defeat last weekend to APIA Leichhardt FC.
The Key Decider: Quality in Depth
A key strength for the Wanderers so far has been the quality available beyond the starting eleven. In a competition where matches can often be decided in the final stages, the ability to introduce players capable of immediately changing tempo has already become an important asset for the side.
McKenzie demonstrated that influence perfectly last weekend, while Isabella Sultan also provided another strong option capable of bringing fresh attacking energy and quality when games begin to open up.
That depth gives the Wanderers greater flexibility across the ninety minutes and allows Jamie Dib’s side to maintain attacking pressure even as opposition defences begin to tire, something that could again prove crucial in another tight away contest.
For the Red and Black, another strong defensive display will be key after showing resilience through difficult periods in both opening matches. While the side has looked dangerous in transition and increasingly confident in wide areas, maintaining concentration in defensive moments and limiting set-piece opportunities will remain a focus.
The Wanderers have also shown promising attacking variety, with runners arriving from deep and wide players consistently creating dangerous situations inside the penalty area. If that movement continues with the same intensity, they will back themselves to create chances once again.
A third consecutive away fixture to begin the season presents another demanding assignment, but emerging from theopening three rounds unbeaten would represent an excellent platform for the side as the season begins to take shape.
