A dominant Sydney Olympic side handed the Wanderers NPL Women’s team a 3-0 defeat at Belmore Sportsground.
There were initial doubts over whether the match would go ahead, with thunderstorms and lightning passing through the Belmore area. Eventually, the game kicked off 75 minutes after the scheduled 5pm start on Sunday evening.
From the outset, Sydney Olympic controlled the match. The Wanderers were forced to absorb waves of pressure, and it proved too much, as Tiana Fuller opened the scoring inside ten minutes with a composed finish into the bottom corner after shifting direction in the box.
Ten minutes later, Aideen Keane charged down the right flank, only to be denied by Aimee Hall as she looked to score her fourth goal of the season.
Keane was again thwarted just before half-time, with Hall rushing out to stop a one-on-one chance. The resulting deflection nearly found its way into the net before Barton cleared it for a corner.
The Wanderers headed into the break trailing 1-0, having had very little time on the ball as Olympic dominated possession.
Fuller threatened to double the lead early in the second half, but Hall came up big once more. The pressure finally told in the 78th minute when Peta Trimis delivered a well-placed cross into the box, finding Keane who made no mistake to score her fourth of the season.
Maxine Peak then intercepted an Olivia D’Costa back-pass intended for Hall in a dangerous area and squared it for Keane to fire into an empty net, sealing Olympic’s third.
The loss is the Wanderers’ first since Round 12, and also the first time this season they’ve failed to register a shot on target. They will look to bounce back this Sunday at Wanderers Football Park when they take on the Illawarra Stingrays in what is shaping up to be a must-win clash.
