NPL Women’s Wrap: Sydney University defeat Wanderers

The Western Sydney Wanderers NPL Women’s side have gone down 2-0 to Sydney University following a Talia Kapetenellis double at Wanderers Football Park on Sunday.

Injuries, departures and representative call ups forced the Wanderers into a host of changes for their clash against Sydney University as the side looked to regain some form heading into the final rounds of the competition.

The Wanderers looked to dominate early proceedings, as they were able to find themselves in dangerous positions in the opening twenty minutes, but their failure to trouble the Sydney University goal left them disappointed.

Frida Kareberis, Anika Stajcic and Alvina Khoshaba all saw their strikes go wayward of the posts, Stajcic’s second strike came within inches of flying into the back of the net, the bounce off the cross bar did not favour the young striker as it went out for a goal kick.

Moments later, former Wanderer Talia Kapetanellis punished the Wanderers as she caught Aimee Hall off her line with a strike from distance. The curling shot would loop over the Goalkeeper for a goal that was seemingly against the momentum of the game.

The Wanderers would head into the break with a feeling of despair, as what felt like Red and Black dominance, did not show on the scoreboard.

The visitors would look to double their lead after the break, and they would eventually break the Wanderers resistance with a back post tap in for Kapetanellis, who secured her brace just after the hour mark.

Stajcic would have the chance to get one back, but her scuffed strike saw the ball roll into the path of the goalkeeper.

The result means the Wanderers could face an unprecedented tenth consecutive match without a win if they are unable to overcome NWS Spirit. While there were promising signs of improvement, the team will need to rediscover their finishing touch next Sunday to secure all three points.
