NPL Wrap: Wanderers claim Sydney Derby rights

Our NPL NSW side has emerged victorious in the Sydney Derby for a third time in a row after a dominant second half led them to a 5-2 win away from home.

Marcus Younis had his best game of the season to date as he scored twice, with Zac Sapsford, Aydan Hammond and Ryley Hollingdale also getting on the scoresheet as the Wanderers won their fourth game of the season.

The boys got off to an incredibly fast start, opening the scoring after three minutes as Hammond broke down the left, and whilst his fierce shot cannoned off the crossbar, Younis was on hand to head the ball home.

Hammond had another great chance minutes later, but was denied by a good save from Alex Zaverdinos, before the home side hit back against the run of play through Tiago Quintal.

The Wanderers had two great chances to retake the lead, as Saspford clattered the bar with a strong shot, before Younis went close from a free-kick, only being denied by a diving save from Zaverdinos.

The Wanderers were then unfortunate to go behind after Doni Grdic turned a cross into his own net, but they got back on their feet quickly and equalised through Sapsford just before the break. It wasn’t a pretty goal being a goalmouth scramble after a corner, but captain Sapsford was on hand to score a third goal against his former club in the NPL, in addition to a goal in the A-League Men’s Sydney Derby.

The Wanderers then took control of the game after half-time, as Hammond got a richly deserved goal when he cut inside and fired a powerful shot past Zaverdinos.
Younis got his second when he latched onto Hollingdale’s pass and finished underneath Zaverdinos, before Hollingdale rounded off the scoring with a brilliant free-kick that curled into the top corner of the net.

The result leaves the Wanderers in third, though they can move into first if they win their game in hand taking place on Wednesday against Central Coast.
