Our NPL NSW side has fallen to a 2-0 defeat against Sydney United in their last home game of the season.
An early red card to Antony Barbic made the task for the young Wanderers difficult, and whilst they fought hard and created some good chances, United were able to utilise their extra man advantage.
Barbic’s dismissal came in the fifth minute after he committed a last man foul on Aiden Milicevic, and Tristan Vidackovic made a good save from Patrick Antelmi’s resulting free kick.
The Wanderers went close minutes later with a free kick of their own, as Ryley Hollingdale forced Oliver Kalac into a full stretch stop.
Jesse Cameron then had a chance in the box for the Wanderers, but his teammate Awan Lual inadvertently blocked the effort.
Sydney United hit the front through Milicevic in the 18th minute, and doubled their advantage just after the half hour mark as they used the extra space to score through Stephen De Robbillard.
The Wanderers continued their quest to get back into the game in the second half, and Phil Gilgiotti thought he had halved the deficit after the break, but the flag went up for offside.
Dallo Sandy came off the bench and tried to curl an effort in from the edge of the area, but a deflection off a defender took the venom out of the effort and Kalac was able to save comfortably.
Cameron went close again as the game wore on, and Kalac again had to be alert to make the save.
It was a valiant effort from the Wanderers, who were up against it from the start, and they should take heart from a courageous performance; they travel to face Sydney Olympic on Saturday.
