NPL Wrap: Wanderers go down to Bonnyrigg

On Tuesday evening, the Wanderers NPL 2 team were defeated 4-1 by Bonnyrigg White Eagles in their rescheduled match at Valentine Sports Park.

Goals from Evan Tsakos and Jacob Vasiliou weren’t enough for the Wanderers on the night as Bonnyrigg prevailed after a Jack Armson double, plus goals from Ray Miller and Asmir Kadric.

The Red & Black started brilliantly, taking the lead on five minutes. Marley Peterson and Ali Auglah combined well on the edge of the area to set up Tsakos, who drilled the ball into the bottom corner.

Wanderers goalkeeper Jack Greenwood then saved comfortably from David Vrankovic and Mohamed Al Taay made an excellent covering tackle to stop a Bonnyrigg counter-attack, while at the other end Auglah pounced on a loose ball but couldn’t hit the target.

Celebration

On the half-hour, Vasiliou fired a shot inches wide from outside the area.

The game was then flipped on its head as Bonnyrigg equalised on 33 minutes through Armson, and went 2-1 up a minute later after Miller found the net.

Al Taay made another crucial intervention on 38 minutes, throwing his body in the way of a shot when Bonnyrigg looked certain to score.

The Wanderers responded well to being behind at the break, levelling the scores early in the second half.

Vasiliou hit the back of the net in spectacular fashion, turning sharply to beat a defender and sending a left footed shot into the top corner from 25-yards out.

Celebration

The Red & Black were then forced to defend and Greenwood made an excellent save from an Aaron Peterson header, before Thomas McPherson did well to block a goalbound shot.

Unfortunately, the Wanderers fell behind again just past the hour mark, Armson scoring to put Bonnyrigg 3-2 up.

The Wanderers would have a good spell as they pushed for another equaliser. McPherson got on the end of Tsakos’s free kick but couldn’t beat the goalkeeper and there were also opportunities for Vasiliou and Peterson.

Bonnyrigg would make it 4-2 in the 83rd minute, Kadric scoring after a counter attack.

The Red & Black had one last chance in the final minute when Peterson broke away from the defence, however his shot was saved by Bonnyrigg goalkeeper James Chronopoulos.

The Wanderers NPL 2 team fall to eighth place following the defeat. The U18s and U20s fared better on teh weekend with both teams winning comfortably.
