NPL Wrap: Wanderers snatch last minute victory against Olympic

A stoppage time stunner from Nathaneal Blair has seen our NPL NSW side snatch a late 3-2 victory at home against Sydney Olympic.

In a dramatic contest in at times torrential rain, our top scorer bagged his 13th of the season with an unstoppable free-kick in the 91st minute, at Wanderers Football Park.

The match began with a bang as the visitors took the lead after four minutes through Michael Vakis, though we hit back straight away with two quick goals.

Alex Badolato scored just two minutes later with a first-time finish in the middle of the box, before defender Anthony Pantazopoulos pulled off a striker’s finish with a side-footed volley in the eighth minute.

After a frantic start, the game slowed, though Zac Sapsford and Marcus Younis had chances to double the advantage, whilst Taiga Harper pulled off a smart save to deny Teng Kuol.

The Wanderers thought they found a third goal just after the break when Aydan Hammond finished off a slick counter-attacking move, but the flag went up for offside instead.

The rain began to fall with increasing intensity in the second stanza as both sides pushed forward, and it would be Sydney Olympic who would equalise in the 70th minute, with former Wanderers Kuol smashing a free-kick into the top corner.

It wouldn’t be the most decisive free-kick of the match, though, as a foul on the edge of the area gave attacking superstar Blair to have his moment, and he made no mistake as he rifled his set piece into the top right corner of the goal, giving Noah James in goal no chance.

The victory means the Wanderers stay at the top of the table, one point clear of Rockdale Ilinden FC; a local derby is up next for the Red and Black as they host Marconi Stallions on Saturday.
