The Wanderers A-League Women’s team are on the road this weekend with hopes that they can secure a very important points against league heavyweights Melbourne City.
It has been a rollercoaster of a season for the Red & Black who have secured only one win in their eight matches played so far.
Head coach Catherine Cannuli’s side have been in every single contest but have struggled up front, registering only a handful of goals this season.
The Wanderers head into the match after a very disappointing result against Adelaide United, in one of their very last home matches of the season.
Kayla Sharples put the first Reds goal on the board inside five minutes after a faulty sprinkler head delayed the start of the game by 22 minutes.
The visitors burst out of the blocks, with Wanderers keeper Sarah Langman pulling off a string of saves to keep her side in it before a second-half collapse saw the Reds waltz away with the points.
While Melbourne City, who are on the opposite end of the ladder registered their sixth win of the season in a dramatic 2-1 win against Brisbane Roar when the teams faced off at Moreton Daily Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
It was an action-packed second half as Brisbane opened the scoring thanks to a Katrina Gorry penalty, before Rhianna Pollicina scored a brilliant free-kick to equalise later on. Even later, however, it would be Hannah Wilkinson who would snatch all three points with the winner deep into stoppage time.
The Wanderers have a lot to be wary of the full-strength and high flying City side and will need to fight for every ball and every minute to get some points out of the match.
