On Monday, 29 January 2024, the independent Match Review Panel (MRP) – consisting of Simon Micallef (Chair), Alan Davidson and Alan Contini – convened to consider incidents arising over the course of the Isuzu UTE A-League Men and Liberty A-League Women matches played between Thursday, 25 January 2024 and Sunday, 28 January 2024.

Aidan Simmons (Western Sydney Wanderers FC)

The independent MRP considered an incident in or around the 66th minute of Western Sydney Wanderers FC’s Isuzu UTE A-League Men match against Western United FC on Saturday, 27 January 2024, in which Aidan Simmons (Simmons) received a direct Red Card.

In accordance with the A-League Disciplinary Regulations (the Regulations), the MRP has the authority to consider the incident as Simmons was issued with a direct Red Card by the referee.

The MRP determined that Simmons committed the offence of ‘Serious foul play’. The minimum sanction for the offence is a one (1) match suspension, being the Mandatory Match Suspension. The MRP has proposed a suspension of three (3) matches for the offence, being the minimum sanction for the offence plus two (2) additional matches.

Simmons has until 2:00pm (AEDT) on Tuesday, 30 January 2024 to advise Football Australia whether he wishes to refer the matter to the independent Disciplinary and Ethics Committee.
