Defender Jerome Polenz said the trip to Wellington held no surprises for the NRMA Insurance Western Sydney Wanderers FC this weekend.
A pre-season trip to the Shaky Isles and research on their inconsistent opposition meant the Wanderers were primed to bounce back with an away win.
“We are preparing well and training hard and are really looking forward to the game against Wellington,” Polenz said.
“We know we need to be more effective around goal. We could not quite find the gap against Melbourne Victory and we need to be more effective in the final third of the pitch.”
The Wanderers drew 1-1 with Wellington Phoenix FC when they played pre season.
The German import said the Wanderers- fantastic supporter base made him feel welcome.
“It is very nice to be here in Australia,” he said. “We have a very good crowd and great supporters and I enjoy having them behind us very much.”
Polenz, an Under 20 Germany representative, said he found out about the Hyundai A-League from friend and Brisbane Roar star midfielder Thomas Broich.
“I saw a movie about him in Germany and I watched the movie and I could see that everything had grown out here and the league is becoming more and more famous,” Polenz said.
He also knew former Germany assistant World Cup coach Holger Osieck was managing the Qantas Socceroos.
“I met Holger before the last game in the locker room and we had a little chat about the game out here,” he said.
His family back in Germany also get their Hyundai A-League fix.
“They wake up early to see the games and they say it looks very good and very fast and they are impressed and excited and they plan to come and visit me,” he said.
