Popa reflects on last night

Some words from Tony Popovic after FC Seoul’s 91st minute winner against Kashima Antlers knocked us out of the Champions League despite our 2-0 away win against Guangzhou Evergrande.

“It’s a strange feeling to sit here and be disappointed after beating Guangzhou 2-0 but that’s how we feel at the moment. With the other result not going our way it’s a disappointing feeling amongst the group and that is expected.

“To win against such a great club and great team and to do it so well shows we’re certainly worthy champions of this competition and it is bitterly disappointing not to be going through.

“In November we were crowned Asian Champions, we deserved that crown. We had a tough period in the A-League from November. It’s been difficult but we as a club will be better for this experience. Adversity can destroy you or make you stronger and everyone will see a stronger Wanderers next year.

“We got seven points away in a very tough group, unfortunately we only picked up one point at home. If we want to look at the statistics of this group it’s a clear point as to why we don’t progress but in terms of our performance tonight we showed why we belong in this competition and we’ll work very hard to get back to where we belong.”
