The NRMA Insurance Western Sydney Wanderers pre-season preparations have continued with a 1-nil victory over the WDSC Wolves FC in Brisbane last night.

In a match played in 3 x 30 minute periods, it was the Wanderers who broke the deadlock in the 80th minute through a Mark Bridge penalty.

Coach Tony Popovic was content with the performance of the squad and believes these matches are paramount to his preparations towards October 6.

“It was a very competitive match, it was a good hit-out, played on a nice pitch and we got to run out a few of our new players and trialists in the process,” Popovic said. “Both Dino (Kresinger) and Jerome (Polenz) both had 30 minutes last night so it is all part of going through the right steps to get us to where we want to be.”

When asked whether he was concerned about the winner coming through the way of a penalty and not in open play, Popovic was simply happy to get the win.

“We created a number of opportunities but the Wolves were a very good opposition last night, they are coming second in their competition for a reason so it was a good run for us.

Now four days into a week long pre-season camp, the former Socceroo is happy with the way the camp is going.

“It-s been great, it-s nice for us all to be together, we-re close to getting our full compliment of players,” he said. “It-s nice to be all together and players being able to spend time together and the staff getting to know them as well, which is important.

“We all know what these guys can do on the pitch but we want to know what they-re like off the pitch as well so we can create that team bond that is part of being a successful team.”
