In-form striker Oriol Riera says the Wanderers are eyeing a top-four finish and are building some momentum ahead of the Hyundai A-League Finals Series.
The Wanderers moved back into the top six after crushing Wellington Phoenix 4-0 at ANZ Stadium on Sunday night.
Riera got on the scoresheet for a third straight game, starting the rout with a superb header inside the first 10 minutes.
“We’re very happy to win. It’s maybe the first game where we’ve felt confident that we were going to win the game,” Riera told Fox Sports.
“I think we played the best game [of the season]. We have eight games more, we’re closer to fourth place and we keep going.
“Game-by-game we’re improving…we have to improve a lot,” the Spanish attacker added.
“We still make many mistakes which maybe against other teams they can kill us.
“We have a very big gap to improve but game-by-game we’re doing this. It’s just confidence. We feel better now, we feel more confident with and without the ball.”
That’s now back-to-back wins for the Wanderers, who have surged to 25 points to be just three behind fourth-placed Adelaide United.
And Riera admits that fourth spot, which brings with it a home final in the opening week of the playoffs, is the ultimate target over the final eight games of the regular season.
“We have to think about winning game-by-game. Football is just about winning,” he said.
“We’re closer to fourth place now. We have the team to be there, it’s just to continue this improving.
“We have to arrive with very good confidence in the finals. That’s the objective we can do.”
