Dylan Scicluna has spoken of the belief building within the Western Sydney Wanderers after delivering one of the standout performances in Tuesday night’s Sydney Super Cup clash with Chelsea.
The midfielder capped off an impressive display with a composed second-half goal, but says the occasion was about much more than finding the back of the net.
Facing one of the world’s biggest clubs gave the 21-year-old the opportunity to test himself against some of the game’s elite, an experience he says he’ll never forget.
“It’s a surreal experience,” he explains.
“You know, you watch these players on your TV on Stan (Sport) every week in the Prem.
“It’s every boy’s dream to play in the Prem one day and you’re playing against some of the best players in the world.
“So to test yourself against the best, and put yourself on show, yeah, it’s an unbelievable experience and I think the whole night was special for everyone involved.”
Scicluna’s composed display in midfield reflected the confidence growing within a Wanderers side beginning to take shape under Head Coach Ufuk Talay.
Comfortable receiving the ball under pressure and willing to drive the team forward, the midfielder controlled long periods of the contest before capping off his performance with just the second goal of his senior career.
Despite the quality of the opposition, Scicluna admitted the emotion of scoring didn’t fully sink in until after the ball crossed the line.
“When the ball hit the back of the net… I went a bit almost pitch black for a few seconds. (I) couldn’t believe what happened, and then the adrenaline kicked in,”
Scicluna laughed as he reflected on the moment, before revealing there wasn’t too much planning behind the finish.
“Typically I don’t score much,” Scicluna said. “It’s only my second goal in my career.
“I found myself higher up the pitch than I usually do. The ball fell to me and I saw from the corner of my eye that it was only one v one and I thought if I can, with his momentum, flick it the other way and get an opportunity to shoot… and yeah (it worked).”
While the goal was a memorable personal moment, Scicluna believes the performance reflected something much bigger than one night against Chelsea.
Following a disappointing 2025/26 campaign, the Wanderers have embraced a fresh start under Ufuk Talay, with the playing group determined to establish a new identity and set higher standards heading into the new season.
Scicluna says that change has been evident since the first day of pre-season.
“We all had to sit down, have a look in the mirror and have a good hard look at ourselves because you know no one involved with the club was happy with how last year went,” Scicluna said.
“But yeah there’s been some change, some fresh blood that’s come in, and it’s been really nice playing under Uffy (Talay). His messages are clear and I think you saw tonight how we want to play this year. It’s quite exciting and on the front foot.”
Those words echoed the style supporters saw throughout Tuesday night’s performance, with the Wanderers pressing aggressively, attacking with intent and showing the confidence to take the game to one of world football’s biggest clubs.
For Scicluna, the Chelsea clash was another opportunity to continue his own development while measuring himself against the very best.
Like many young Australian footballers, he dreams of one day representing the Socceroos, but knows the focus must remain on improving every day and contributing to the Wanderers.
“Every Australian boy’s dream is to play with the Socceros one day and of course it’s my dream,” he said.
“I’d love to play with the Socceroos and especially watching them at the World Cup recently, even more you want to pull that jersey on and represent them and represent your country.
“But for now it’s just about… we’re in pre season ourselves, it’s just about getting your head down, focusing on your football individually, getting better and fitter every day and yeah things happen and… fingers crossed it happens one day, but yeah, right now it’s just about getting your head down and playing my best football to help the team.”
For now, Scicluna’s focus remains firmly on helping drive the Wanderers forward.
With a new Head Coach, a clear identity beginning to emerge and belief building throughout the squad, performances like Tuesday night’s are another encouraging step as the Red & Black continue their preparations for the 2026/27 season.
