Scicluna stars as Wanderers rediscover rhythm on the road

The Western Sydney Wanderers delivered a statement performance on Saturday night, producing a dominant first-half display to dismantle Macarthur FC 4-0 at Campbelltown Stadium and breathe fresh life into their campaign.

In a clash that always carries extra edge, the Red & Black wasted no time asserting themselves. Steven Ugarkovic’s sixth-minute opener set the tone for a ruthless opening 45 minutes, with Bozhidar Kraev and Ryan Fraser both adding their names to the scoresheet before the break.

Brandon Borrello’s composed second-half finish, courtesy of a driving assist from Dylan Scicluna, rounded out one of the Wanderers’ most complete performances of the season.

For Scicluna, the fourth goal was a reflection of belief as much as execution.

“It’s never easy dribbling past people,” he said post-match.

“There wasn’t much on so I thought I’m going to get myself out of this. Once I got past Talbot, I saw Buzz pulling off the shoulder of Da Silva. I thought if I can just put this just past him, he’s in a position to score.”

The delivery was weighted perfectly, allowing Borrello to calmly convert and seal the result, but Scicluna was quick to shift the focus away from himself.

“It’s not so much about me. It’s about the club and the fans. I think tonight finally clicked for us. Everyone and everything clicked. The forwards got their goals and the clean sheet was important. It’s brilliant for everyone.”

That sense of cohesion was evident throughout the contest. The Wanderers were sharp in possession, aggressive in their press and disciplined without the ball.

Even after racing to a three-goal half-time lead, they remained organised and composed, managing the game professionally to secure a valuable clean sheet on the road.

The result arrives at a crucial juncture in the season, with the table tightening and every point carrying added significance. For Scicluna, the emphatic nature of the win could prove pivotal.

“The season’s still well alive,” he said. “

It’s tight and anyone can beat anyone on a given day, like today. We’re full of confidence now. Hopefully tonight’s a turning point.”

Attention now shifts to a significant away trip against the high-flying Newcastle Jets at McDonald Jones Stadium next weekend.

With momentum restored and belief renewed, the Wanderers head north knowing that another strong performance could further shape the narrative of their run home.
