Stengel fires Wanderers to victory over Canberra

Stengel fires Wanderers to victory over Canberra

The Western Sydney Wanderers have taken all three points in their clash against Canberra United after a 1-0 win at Campbelltown Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

After a late goal in the first half by Wanderers leading goal scorer, Katie Stengel, the Red & Black worked tirelessly in defence to keep the visitors at bay, holding out for their first ever win over Canberra United.

Both sides shared the possesion early on but it was the Wanderers Jada Whyman who was the first keeper called into action doing well to hold onto the ball after Helen Petinos nearly diverted Hayley Raso’s cross into her own net.

Erica Halloway’s speed down the right flank provided the Red & Black with some attacking options, while Katie Stengel was denied in a one-on-one chance with keeper Trudy Burke.

It wasn’t long before Stengel opened up the scoring, firing low and hard into the bottom-right corner before the break.

Raso and Ashley Sykes combined frequently to give United many of thier chances but were unable to provide a finishing touch.

A nasty collision between Hannah Brewer and Halloway temporarily paused the match with both thankfully returning to their feet.

Canberra almost came up with the equaliser after a pass from Sykes rolled just centremetres past the face of the goal.

The Wanderers nearly increased their lead after a great through ball left Stengel only with the keeper to beat but the striker skied the ball into the stands.

Canberra’s Jasyme Spencer had one last chance for the away side but her shot was comfortably saved by Jada Whyman.

Although the finals are now out of reach for the Wander Women, they’ll look to claim their fifth victory of the season when the host Perth Glory at Popondetta Park on Sunday.
