With pride, momentum and bragging rights on the line, the Red & Black will be looking to make another statement against their cross-town rivals on the league’s biggest stage.

Western Sydney Wanderers head into the Derby full of belief after securing a dramatic 1–0 victory over Perth Glory at CommBank Stadium on Sunday night.

In a tightly contested affair, the Wanderers were forced to withstand early pressure, with goalkeeper Lawrence Thomas producing a series of outstanding saves to keep the visitors at bay. Thomas denied Adam Taggart from close range, tipped Tom Lawrence’s curling free-kick away and reacted sharply to block Nicholas Pennington’s powerful volley just before half-time.

Looking to change the momentum, Head Coach Gary van Egmond turned to his bench shortly after the hour mark, introducing debutant Ryan Fraser. The Scot made an immediate impact, lifting the tempo and energising the Wanderers’ attack.

Western Sydney pushed relentlessly in the closing stages and were rewarded deep into stoppage time. After a corner was only partially cleared, Fraser unleashed a ferocious half-volley through traffic and into the net, sparking scenes of celebration and sealing all three points.

The win lifted the Wanderers off the bottom of the Isuzu UTE A-League ladder and provides valuable momentum heading into the Sydney Derby.

Sydney FC enter the Derby following a heavy 4–0 defeat to Melbourne Victory in the Australia Day Big Blue, a result that halted their push for top spot on the ladder.

Despite a positive start, with the home side having two early goals ruled out for offside, Sydney were unable to capitalise on their early pressure. Goalkeeper Harrison Devenish-Meares produced several important saves to keep the Sky Blues in the contest as Sydney gradually grew into the match.

The second half proved difficult, with Victory breaking the deadlock shortly after the restart before adding further goals as the contest opened up. The loss leaves Sydney FC eager to respond as they turn their attention to Saturday night’s Derby showdown.

The last time these two sides met earlier this season, the Wanderers claimed Derby bragging rights with a hard-fought 1–0 victory at CommBank Stadium.

In a match defined by intensity and emotion, Western Sydney dominated long periods and struck the woodwork twice before finding the decisive moment early in the second half. Alou Kuol scored his first goal in Red & Black, proving the difference in a pulsating contest.

Sydney FC pushed hard late in search of an equaliser, but the Wanderers’ defence held firm as they secured a memorable Derby victory in front of the Red & Black faithful.
