The NRMA Insurance Western Sydney Wanderers have been defeated 5-0 in the 17th Sydney Derby at ANZ Stadium on Saturday night.
A double by Adrian Mierzejewski, as well as goals from Alex Brosque, Brandon O’Neill and an own goal, saw the Sky Blues secure a comfortable win the blockbuster Sydney Derby.
It didn’t take long for Sydney to jump into the lead with Mierzejewski tapping in a palmed away shot by David Carney.
The Wanderers almost pulled one back after Alvaro Cejudo’s powerful strike was tipped onto the crossbar by Andrew Redmayne.
Brosque made it 2-0 after a clever lob from Bobo positioned the striker to put one past Vedran Janjetovic.
Things then went from bad to worse for the Wanderers with Mierzejewski’s free-kick evading the Wanderers going into the back of the net.
An error by youngster Lachlan Scott gifted Sydney their fourth goal with Zullo following up with the fifth moments later.
In a turn of events, Zullo’s goal was ruled out by the VAR after a hand ball during the build-up of play.
Janjetovic was on song and made a double save to deny two great chances that followed by Sydney.
Roly Bonevacia tried his luck from long range but his shot was calmly collected by Andrew Redmayne.
Sydney scored their fifth after a curling effort from Brandon O’Neill fired into the far corner.
The Red & Black followed up with two good chances by Jumpei and Brendon Santalab but neither were enough to prevent Sydney from keeping a clean sheet.
The Wanderers will now turn their focus to Saturday’s match at Central Coast Stadium against the Mariners.
