Fresh from an emphatic 5-2 victory over reigning Champions Auckland FC at CommBank Stadium, the Wanderers head into their next challenge with growing belief in the style of football Talay has been implementing since his arrival.

The five-goal performance was a statement of attacking intent, but for Talay, the confidence developing within the squad is just as important as the result itself.

“I think confidence is important, especially in sport and in football, the way that we want to play as well,” Talay said.

“It’s great that the boys are confident that they can showcase how they want to play and what they want to do.

“The week has been good, training has been good. I think that’s very important for us. It’s another game, another big opportunity for us to take another step forward.”

While the Wanderers’ attacking display against Auckland turned heads, Talay insists the performance was no surprise to those inside the club.

The head coach pointed to the foundations established throughout an impressive pre-season, where the squad worked to develop an identity built on aggression without the ball and confidence in possession.

“The boys have done that all pre-season. I think it’s been a great lead-in to the season, so it wasn’t a surprise,” he said.

“That’s what we expect of the group. When we don’t have the ball, to be very aggressive and work very hard, but also play the game of football when we do have the ball.”

Attention now turns to Macarthur, with the Wanderers looking to carry that same intensity and attacking ambition into another important test.

Talay expects the Bulls to present a different tactical challenge but made it clear that his side will not compromise the principles that have underpinned their performances so far.

“We’ll play our game again, the way we want to play,” Talay said.

“When we don’t have the ball, we’ll be very aggressive and defend forward, and make sure we know their strengths.

“At the same time, it’s very important that if we have a lot of the ball against Macarthur, who sit in a mid-block, that we find ways to break them down.”

With confidence building and a clear identity taking shape, Saturday night’s local rivalry presents another opportunity for the Wanderers to demonstrate their progress and continue building momentum in the opening stages of the A-League Men season.

For Talay and his squad, the focus remains firmly on taking the next step forward.
