Talay determined to deliver football that resonates with Western Sydney

Western Sydney Wanderers head coach Ufuk Talay is determined to build a football identity that reflects the passion and character of Western Sydney, as the Red & Black prepare to return to CommBank Stadium for their first home match of the 2026/27 A-League season against Auckland FC on Saturday afternoon.

Following a hard-fought opening round Sydney Derby, Talay is eager for his side to take another step forward, with an emphasis on showing greater confidence in possession while maintaining the competitiveness displayed against their cross-city rivals.

Speaking to the media ahead of Saturday’s clash, the head coach reflected on the challenges of beginning the campaign with a Derby and the areas he wants to see his squad improve as the season progresses.

“I think getting round one out of the way was very important. Starting off with the Derby is never an easy feat,” said Talay.

“I think the boys performed in a sense where they dealt with the duels and the physicality of what the Derby generally is, but they know and we know our expectation was to actually put the ball down and play some football at the same time when we had the ball at our feet.

“They changed their game plan completely to play against us. And this week we’re playing a similar team that’s very direct.

“Their strengths are being direct, set pieces and long balls. So it’s going to be another challenge. But I think the most important thing is that we’re brave when we do have the ball.”

The Wanderers enter the contest having secured a point in their opening round goalless draw against Sydney FC, a performance that demonstrated the defensive resilience and physical commitment Talay expects from his players.

However, with the squad continuing to adapt to his philosophy, the head coach is equally focused on establishing a more expressive attacking identity that gives supporters something to get behind.

For Talay, that identity is about more than results. It is about creating a style of football that connects the team with the community it represents.

“We want to play a brand of football that resonates with our fans and our region,” said Talay.

“Hopefully they can see that tomorrow afternoon against Auckland. Hopefully the fans will come back in the way that we play and hopefully the results will go well to bring the fans back in.

“But like I said, we’ll definitely play a brand that will resonate with them.”

Saturday’s opposition will provide another significant test for the Red & Black, with Auckland FC arriving in Western Sydney following an impressive 3-1 opening round victory over Melbourne City.

Talay is well aware of the challenge posed by the visitors but believes the occasion of playing at home for the first time this season provides an opportunity for his side to make a statement.

“They’ve had a positive start to the season and this is our first game at home and our first game in front of our fans at home,” said Talay.

“So we want to produce a good game and a good result.”

One player particularly motivated for the occasion will be Liam Gillion, who joined the Wanderers during the off-season after previously representing Auckland FC.

The young winger has already caught the attention of his new head coach, who believes his pace, technical ability and attacking instincts make him an exciting addition to the Red & Black.

“I always liked Liam. He had little moments at Auckland when he was used. Not so much last season, but the first season he was quite involved,” said Talay.

“He’s got some very good attributes. He’s rapid. He’s technically very good, can assist in goals and can score goals.

“He’s a young talent. And that’s what we’re trying to be here. We’re trying to give opportunities to young players, even coming through our academy at the same time.

“He’s an exciting player. They just need opportunities to play and build that momentum. And I think he’ll definitely do that with the game time he’s going to get.

“I think it’s a great occasion for him to play against his old team.”

Talay’s comments reinforce a broader vision for the Wanderers, with opportunities for emerging talent forming an important part of the club’s direction alongside the development of a clear and recognisable playing style.

That vision will take another step forward on Saturday when the Wanderers return to Wanderland for a blockbuster double header.

The Ninja A-League side will open proceedings against Brisbane Roar at 2:15pm before Talay’s Men take on Auckland FC at 5:00pm.

With the Red & Black faithful returning to CommBank Stadium, the stage is set for the Wanderers to begin building momentum on home soil.

And for Talay, the ambition is clear: to deliver performances that not only earn results, but give Western Sydney a team and a style of football it can connect with.

The Wanderers Men face Auckland FC at 5:00pm this Saturday 24 October at CommBank Stadium, following the Wanderers Women’s clash against Brisbane Roar at 2:15pm. One ticket provides access to both matches.
