Tongyik returns to the Wanderers

Western Sydney Wanderers FC have tonight confirmed the signing of defender Ruon Tongyik for the next two A-Leagues seasons.

The towering defender was previously with the club back in 2018 and departed after a series of injuries limited his playing time.

Over the last three seasons, Tongyik has continued his growth and development at the Central Coast Mariners where he made 41 appearances in the domestic competition.

During his time in the Central Coast, Tongyik was called into the Australian National Team with the Socceroos where he made two appearances in 2021 on their path to World Cup Qualification.

Western Sydney Wanderers head coach Mark Rudan welcomed Tongyik back to the club.

“Ruon has a great amount of respect for the club and we are looking forward to working with him so that he can reach his potential over the next two years,” said Rudan.

Defender Ruon Tongyik said he was delighted to be back.

“When I spoke to head coach Mark Rudan, he spoke highly about me. From the way I am as a person and my ability as a football player. He thinks that bringing me into the team will help him in a lot of different aspects. I think there are other reasons as well, he feels like I am a great defender and I have a lot to prove in the league,” said Tongyik.

“Even when I was back here at the Wanderers, I’ve always had a lot of love and respect for the club. The thing that did bring me back was the head coach’s plans for the future of the club. I think it’s a football club where I will be able to develop in and I’m excited to be here.

“It feels great to be back, I feel excited and the facilities. There’s been a lot of changes at the club and I’m ready to be part of that change.

“I can’t wait for this season, it’s going to be a great season and I can’t wait for all the members and fans to be back at CommBank Stadium. Let’s get going!”
