van Egmond: The line in the sand has been drawn

The Western Sydney Wanderers returned to winning ways on Sunday night, securing a dramatic 1-0 victory over Perth Glory at CommBank Stadium, and with it, new Head Coach Gary van Egmond marked his first success in charge of the club.

It was a game that tested every ounce of belief and resilience within the squad. Perth Glory applied early pressure, creating chances and forcing the Wanderers to defend with discipline.

Goalkeeper and Captain Lawrence Thomas was exceptional between the posts, denying Adam Taggart from close range, tipping Tom Lawrence’s curling free-kick over the bar, and reacting sharply to block Nicholas Pennington’s powerful volley on the stroke of halftime.

The intensity on display underlined the fine margins that define football at the top level and the focus required to secure results.

Looking to shift the momentum, van Egmond turned to the bench just after the hour mark, bringing on debutant Ryan Fraser.

The Scottish international’s impact was immediate, injecting energy into the attacking third and giving the Wanderers fresh impetus. Fraser tested the crossbar and saw several attempts blocked before finally producing the breakthrough in stoppage time, rifling a half-volley from a corner past Glory’s goalkeeper to spark celebrations across CommBank Stadium.

Sunday’s victory was about more than just the three points. It was a statement of intent from Van Egmond and the squad. From the first whistle, the team displayed composure under pressure, absorbing Glory’s early attacking threats while probing for opportunities in the final third.

The match had its moments of frustration and near misses, with the Wanderers hitting the post twice in crucial stages and testing the patience of the home crowd.

van Egmond said the response to those moments is exactly what he is looking for in the squad – resilience, focus, and belief that the right effort will eventually pay off.

“When you’re pushing and hitting the post, not once, but twice, you think, right now I know what stage we’re at. But you’ve got to pick yourself up and go again. Keep working. Keep having belief. Eventually, you get your wins. That’s the mentality we’re building here.”

For Van Egmond, Sunday’s result was also about setting standards and showing what is expected from the team in every moment.

The performance provided a platform for him to communicate his expectations: focus in every situation, resilience in adversity, and commitment to collective goals.

Even with only a few days in charge, the match gave a glimpse of the mentality and fight he wants to embed across the squad.

“It’s been a tumultuous period for the Wanderers,” he said.

“You’ve got to be conscious of making too much change, but all kudos goes to the players. The fight, the spirit, they were fantastic.”

van Egmond also reflected on the importance of making every decision count and maintaining focus across the squad as the season moves into its second half.

From substitutions to tactical adjustments, he stressed that each moment on the field requires concentration, energy, and belief from every player.

“It’s just as important the team we finish with as the team we start with. We’ve got a lot to play for in regards to this second half of the season,” he said.

“The line in the sand has been drawn. The old cliché, it’s one game at a time, and it’s a hell of a game next week that it is.”

The victory lifts the Wanderers off the bottom of the Isuzu UTE A-League ladder and gives the squad confidence heading into next weekend’s Sydney Derby. Sunday night was a statement, with the Red & Black carrying this belief into the second half of the season.
