Walking Football brings community together at Wanderers Fives

For ten weeks, Friday mornings at Wanderers Fives have become about more than football.

The WalkSoccer Blacktown program has brought together seniors from across Western Sydney to stay active, build new friendships and experience the benefits of football in a fun, welcoming and inclusive environment.

Delivered in partnership with Walking Football NSW, Western Sydney Local Health District and Blacktown City Council, the program welcomed 21 participants throughout its inaugural 10-week term between 8 May and 3 July, with 11 regular participants returning week after week to become the foundation of a growing WalkSoccer community.

Designed as a safe, low-impact version of the game, Walking Football provides an opportunity for older adults to improve their physical wellbeing while fostering meaningful social connections through the world’s game.

Walking Football Hub Coordinator John Geary said the first term had laid a strong foundation for the program’s future in Western Sydney.

“It’s been a very positive first term and a great start to our goal of bringing Walking Football to the Greater Western Sydney region, where many of the Wanderers’ over-60 supporters live but are still unaware of the many benefits the game offers.

“Walking Football provides physical, mental and social health benefits for seniors. It’s a safe, low-impact sport that boosts fitness, mood and social connection, making it one of the most effective activities for healthy ageing.

“To be able to play at Wanderers Fives within Wanderers Football Park has been a real drawcard and greatly appreciated by everyone who attended. We’re now well positioned to build on these achievements as we move into Term 2.”

Throughout the program, participants developed new skills, increased their physical activity and formed lasting friendships, creating a vibrant community that continues to grow each week.

Blacktown City Council Community Development representative Nadiana Albistur highlighted the strength of the partnership behind the initiative.

“Strong collaborations create stronger communities. Together with Western Sydney Local Health District, Walking Football NSW and the Western Sydney Wanderers, we’re proud to be connecting people through the international game, replacing social isolation with new friendships, local services and a welcoming community. WalkSoccer in Blacktown is becoming bigger and better by the week.”

Western Sydney Wanderers Community Growth Manager Jake Balnave said the Club was proud to host the program at Wanderers Fives.

“We’ve absolutely loved hosting the Blacktown Walk Football program here at Wanderers Fives and welcoming a new audience to enjoy our facility each Friday morning.

“We encourage anyone who’s able to participate to come along, give it a try and become part of this wonderful community.”

Following a successful inaugural term, the program will return for Term 2, with more information to be announced soon.
