Wanderers Carry Derby Momentum into Melbourne City Clash

Western Sydney Wanderers Women will back up quickly on Wednesday night as they travel south to face Melbourne City in a challenging Ninja A-League clash, fresh off a statement Sydney Derby victory at Allianz Stadium.

The Wanderers arrive with belief sky-high after reclaiming Derby bragging rights with a memorable 3–2 win over Sydney FC on Saturday night.

In a performance defined by composure and resilience, goals from Amy Chessari, Allyssa Ng-Saad and Yuan Cong delivered the club’s first Derby win since December 2019 and capped off one of the most significant nights in recent Ninja A-League history for the Red & Black.

After conceding early, Western Sydney responded with authority, controlling possession and building pressure before Chessari’s thunderous long-range strike on the stroke of half-time brought the scores level.

The momentum carried into the second half, with Ng-Saad showing maturity beyond her years to convert from close range before Yuan Cong powered home a header to give the Wanderers breathing room.

Despite late Sydney pressure, the visitors stood firm, with Shamiran Khamis producing crucial saves to seal a famous victory.

Melbourne City, meanwhile, will be eager to respond after suffering a narrow 2–1 defeat to Adelaide United at Coopers Stadium.

While entering the contest with strong attacking intent, City were made to chase the game after conceding in each half, leaving them unable to fully capitalise on extended periods of pressure.

City’s quality was evident throughout, with Holly McNamara – making her 50th Ninja A-League appearance – continuing to threaten alongside Leticia McKenna, who pulled a goal back midway through the second half. However, despite sustained pressure and several late chances, the hosts were unable to find an equaliser.

Wednesday night’s clash shapes as a compelling contrast in momentum.

The Wanderers will be looking to carry the confidence and intensity from their Derby triumph into a demanding away fixture, while Melbourne City will aim to reassert themselves at home and convert dominance into points.

With both sides boasting attacking firepower and no shortage of motivation, fans can expect a high-tempo contest as Western Sydney look to build on a landmark victory and test themselves against one of the competition’s benchmark teams.
