The Western Sydney Wanderers are the FOXTEL Y-League Champions following a thrilling 3-1 extra-time win over Melbourne City at McDonald Jones Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Goals by Lachlan Scott, Marc Tokich and John Roberts secured the win for the Red & Black in extra time after the scores were locked at 1-1 at the end of full time.

The Wanderers enjoyed the better of the first stanza and went close to opening the scoring in the 25th minute with Scott’s powerful effort well saved by City keeper James Delianov.

City were awarded a penalty after Zach Bates was brought down inside the area, with Denis Genreau making no mistake from the spot.

The Red & Black fought their way back into the contest and grabbed a deserved equaliser with Scott finishing off some neat work from Majok and Roberts.

Marko Delic almost grabbed a late winner for City in stoppage time but his left-footed strike cannoned off the post with Wanderers keeper Nick Suman beaten.

The Wanderers took the lead in extra-time with Tokich firing the Red & Black ahead just before the end of the first additional period.

City continued to fight and had a chance to equalise in the 110th minute only for Ramy Najjarine to blaze over the bar from just outside the six-year box.

And the miss proved costly with John Roberts sealing the win for the Wanderers less than a minute later with a superb finish.

The result sees the Wanderers crowned the FOXTEL Y-League Champions for the very first time in the club’s history, with goalscorer Lachlan Scott saying that the belief was always there in the side.

“The boys did well and fought back. We knew we had it in us,” said Scott.

“We’ve been doing fitness all year and we knew we had the legs to run over the top of them.

“The belief was still there and all us boys get along so belief was always going to be there.”
