Western Sydney Wanderers fell to a narrow 1-0 defeat against Adelaide United at Wanderers Football Park on Sunday evening in the Ninja A-League.
The visitors began the contest with intent and were denied an early opener thanks to a crucial defensive intervention from Poppie Hooks, who produced an outstanding goal-line clearance to keep out Fiona Worts’ effort in the 11th minute.
Adelaide continued to apply pressure, with Erin Healy firing narrowly wide as the Wanderers backline was forced to defend deep, but the Red & Black grew into the contest as the half wore on. The home side’s best opportunity of the opening stanza came just before the break, when Millie Bennett struck a first-time effort on goal, comfortably held by Adelaide goalkeeper Ilona Melegh.
The decisive moment arrived shortly after the hour mark in cruel circumstances for the Wanderers. Matilda McNamara’s strike rebounded off the post before deflecting off defender Danika Matos and into the net, leaving the home side unfortunate to fall behind.
Refusing to drop their heads, the Wanderers pushed forward in search of an equaliser and came agonisingly close in the 68th minute, with Melegh producing an excellent save to tip Allyssa Ng-Saad’s dipping effort around the post.
The pressure continued late as the Wanderers committed numbers forward, but Adelaide held firm in the closing stages to secure the points.
Despite the result, the Wanderers showed grit and determination throughout the contest and will look to take confidence from their performance as they continue to build momentum in the closing stages of the season.
