Western Sydney Wanderers have gone down 2-1 to Melbourne City on Sunday afternoon, with a moment of brilliance from Talia Younis proving a late highlight in a hard-fought contest.
The match took an early turn when Melbourne City were reduced to 10 players in the 17th minute, but the visitors responded quickly to take control of the scoreboard before half-time.
After a relatively even opening, the game sparked into life when Chinaza Uchendu was shown a straight red card following an off-the-ball incident, handing the Wanderers a numerical advantage.
Despite this, it was Melbourne City who struck first less than 10 minutes later. A lofted ball forward was brought down into the path of Leticia McKenna, who finished neatly under Sham Khamis to give the visitors the lead.
The Wanderers looked to respond and nearly found a breakthrough late in the first half when Younis delivered a dangerous in-swinging ball that drifted through the area and struck the base of the post.
However, just before the break, Melbourne City extended their advantage. A long free-kick forward resulted in a loose defensive header, allowing McKenna to square the ball to Bryleeh Henry who converted from close range to make it 2-0.
Western Sydney came out with intent in the second half and were rewarded early with a stunning strike from Younis. The 17-year-old reacted quickest to a short free-kick and unleashed a powerful effort from distance that flew into the top corner, giving the Wanderers a deserved lifeline.
The Red and Black continued to push for an equaliser, applying sustained pressure and forcing Melbourne City onto the defensive for much of the second half.
Despite their efforts, the Wanderers were unable to find a second goal, with City holding firm to secure the result.
While the points went the way of the visitors, Younis’ standout strike and the side’s persistence ensured there were positives to take from the performance.
