Western Sydney Wanderers have suffered a 4-2 defeat to Adelaide United at CommBank Stadium on Friday night, despite an electric start and a stunning strike from Angus Thurgate.
The Red and Black made the perfect opening, striking inside the first 10 minutes through Alex Gersbach. A sharp passage through midfield saw Dylan Scicluna drive a ball across the face of goal, with Gersbach’s effort finding its way past the Adelaide defence to give the Wanderers an early advantage.
Adelaide responded quickly, forcing Lawrence Thomas into a series of strong saves as momentum began to shift.
The visitors found their equaliser midway through the first half when Luka Jovanovic capitalised on a loose ball inside the area, turning sharply before finishing into the bottom corner.
Adelaide struck again on the cusp of half-time, taking advantage of another turnover to edge in front, with Juan Muñiz bundling home from close range.
The Wanderers thought they had drawn level early in the second half when Steven Ugarković found the back of the net, but the effort was ruled out following a VAR review.
Moments later, the Wanderers responded in style. Angus Thurgate produced a moment of quality, controlling a lofted ball before unleashing a powerful volley that left the goalkeeper with no chance and brought the hosts back on level terms.
However, Adelaide again responded almost immediately. Jovanovic restored the visitors’ lead with a composed finish inside the area after working space for himself under pressure.
The decisive moment came from a set piece, with Adelaide capitalising on a loose ball in the box to extend their lead through Panagiotis Kikianis.
The Wanderers continued to push for a way back into the contest, but were unable to break through again as Adelaide held on to secure the points.
Despite periods of strong attacking play and two well-taken goals, the Wanderers were left to rue key moments as the visitors proved clinical when it mattered most.
