The Western Sydney Wanderers had a convincing win on Saturday night in the Foxtel Y-League after defeating Newcastle Jets 3-0 at Valentine Sports Park.

Goals from Andrea Agamemnonos, Lachlan Scott and Tate Russell secured three points for the Red & Black, who have won three out of their opening four games of the season.

Agamemnonos looked lively early on and had a shot deflected out for a corner, before a minute later finding Oliver Puflett who headed wide of the goal.

It was then Abraham Majok’s turn to threaten the Jets, first forcing a save from Newcastle Jets goalkeeper Noah James after a lovely dummy from Scott, and then having a shot cleared off the goalline.

At the other end, there was a piece of brilliant defending from Thomas Aquilina, throwing himself in front of a goalbound shot with the rebound sailing over the crossbar.

Then midway through the first half, the Wanderers took the lead when Scott got on the end of Majok’s cross and laid the ball off for Agamemnonos who sent a curling shot into the top corner.

Scott almost then had a goal of his own a couple minutes later, getting on the end of a wonderful pass from Puflett before rifling a shot into the side netting.

Majok was causing havoc on the left side of the Wanderers attack and a minute later beat a defender inside the area, only to be denied by an excellent save from James.

With the first half drawing to a close, Agamemnonos almost grabbed his second of the evening when his left-footed drive rebounded off the crossbar.

The Red & Black kept up momentum and doubled their lead early in the second half.

Once again Majok was involved, releasing Mathieu Cordier down the left with Cordier’s cross finished from close range by Scott.

Majok and Cordier were dominating on the left wing and it was those two who combined soon afterwards, with Cordier denied by a fantastic save from James.

With 15 minutes to play, the Wanderers made it 3-0. From a set piece, Tass Mourdoukoutas was unlucky to see his shot blocked on the goalline, however, Russell was on hand to score from the rebound.

There were further chances for Scott, as well as Wanderers substitute Marley Peterson, while at the other end Nicholas Suman did well to make two saves from point-blank range.

The Wanderers pushed until the end and Majok had a chance to make it four with the last kick of the game, sending the ball over the crossbar.

The win moves the Red & Black to second place in the Foxtel Y-League Conference B. The Wanderers will next play away to Central Coast Mariners on Saturday 15 December at the Central Coast Mariners Centre of Excellence. Kick-of is at 10:30am.
