The Western Sydney Wanderers were narrowly defeated 3-2 by Adelaide United at Coopers Stadium on Saturday night in an entertaining double-header clash.
Despite the loss, the Red & Black produced one of their more commanding performances of the season, creating chances and showing attacking intent throughout the match.
Western Sydney started strongly, dominating possession in the opening stages. Brandon Borrello and Alou Kuol both tested Adelaide goalkeeper Joshua Smits, keeping the visitors under pressure.
Despite their early dominance, Adelaide struck on the counter, with Craig Goodwin’s long switch finding Yaya Dukuly, whose cross set up Luka Jovanović to blast in a goal that bounced off the crossbar, giving the home side a 1-0 lead at halftime.
The Wanderers returned from the break with renewed energy, peppering the Adelaide defence with shots. Their persistence paid off when Aydan Hammond’s effort deflected off Vinko Stanisic on its way into the net, bringing the scores level.
Adelaide regained the lead when substitute Austin Ayoubi capitalised on a near-post run, guided in by Goodwin from a corner.
Western Sydney responded immediately, earning a penalty moments later after a sliding challenge from Stanisic brought down Angus Thurgate. Brandon Borrello calmly converted from the spot to make it 2-2.
In stoppage time, Adelaide struck again on the counter. Local talent Johnny Yull collected the ball on the left, cut inside onto his right foot, and curled a low shot past Lawrence Thomas to snatch the win.
While the final scoreline was disappointing, there were plenty of positives for the Wanderers.
The team showed attacking flair, created numerous chances, and remained composed against a strong Adelaide side, a performance that leaves plenty of promise for the next match.
