Wanderers look to continue unbeaten start against Melbourne City

The Western Sydney Wanderers will look to extend their unbeaten start to the 2026/27 A-League Men season when they travel to AAMI Park to face Melbourne City this weekend.

Ufuk Talay’s side head into the interstate clash having collected five points from their opening three fixtures, with the Red & Black continuing to build momentum and establish their identity under the new head coach.

The Wanderers were forced to settle for a share of the points in last weekend’s goalless draw against Macarthur FC, despite producing another commanding performance away from home.

Controlling 61.7 per cent of possession and registering 16 attempts on goal, the Wanderers dictated much of the contest at Campbelltown Sports Stadium but were repeatedly denied by Macarthur goalkeeper Alexander Robinson.

Miguel Di Pizio came closest to breaking the deadlock when his first-half effort struck the post, while Liam Gillion, Brandon Borrello and Nicolas Milanović were among those who threatened throughout the encounter.

At the other end, Lawrence Thomas and the Wanderers’ defensive unit remained resolute, securing another clean sheet and ensuring the Red & Black maintained their unbeaten record.

While the finishing touch proved elusive, the performance offered further evidence of the attacking intent, confidence in possession and defensive discipline Talay has been working to instil in his squad.

The challenge this weekend will be converting that dominance into goals against a Melbourne City outfit arriving with renewed confidence following their first victory of the campaign.

Aurelio Vidmar’s side produced an impressive second-half comeback to defeat Sydney FC 2-1 at AAMI Park last Saturday, overturning a one-goal deficit to claim all three points.

After falling behind to a 36th-minute strike from Al Hassan Touré, City responded immediately after the interval through half-time substitute Emiliano Marcondes.

The Danish midfielder needed barely a minute to make his impact, firing home the equaliser before turning provider in the 62nd minute to set up Socceroo Awer Mabil for the winning goal.

Mabil’s powerful finish into the top corner completed the turnaround, with City holding firm under late pressure to secure their first league victory of the season.

The performance highlighted the attacking quality available to Vidmar, with Marcondes, Mabil, Andrew Nabbout and Mathew Leckie among the players capable of influencing proceedings.

For the Wanderers, the trip to Melbourne presents another opportunity to demonstrate their progress against one of the competition’s established contenders.

With the Red & Black showing an increasing ability to control matches through possession and create opportunities in the final third, the focus will be on delivering a complete performance and turning promising passages of play into decisive moments.

The Wanderers have already demonstrated their attacking potential this season, particularly in their emphatic 5-2 victory over Auckland FC at CommBank Stadium, and will be determined to rediscover that cutting edge on the road.

With both sides looking to build momentum in the opening weeks of the campaign, Saturday’s encounter shapes as an intriguing contest between two teams determined to impose their style of football.

For Talay and his squad, the objective is clear: maintain their unbeaten run, continue building their identity and return to Western Sydney with all three points.
