The Western Sydney Wanderers have booked their place in the Hahn Australia Cup Round of 16, defeating Tigers FC 2-0 in a composed performance on a chilly night in Canberra.
In Ufuk Talay’s first competitive match in charge, the Red & Black controlled much of the contest before two second-half goals from Miguel Di Pizio and Brandon Borrello ensured the Wanderers’ 2026/27 campaign began with victory.
Facing a Tigers FC side full of confidence after an impressive season in Capital Football, the Wanderers enjoyed the lion’s share of possession from the opening whistle and looked to dictate proceedings through patient build-up and quick ball movement.
Despite creating several promising opportunities throughout the opening half, the breakthrough proved elusive as the sides went into the interval locked at 0-0.
The Wanderers’ persistence was eventually rewarded in the 67th minute.
A slick attacking move saw captain Brandon Borrello combine brilliantly with Miguel Di Pizio, with the Academy graduate marking his return to Wanderland in perfect fashion by firing a composed finish into the bottom corner for his first competitive goal in Red & Black.
Just four minutes later, the Wanderers doubled their advantage.
Young winger Atiya Waraga burst down the right before delivering a precise ball across the face of goal, allowing Borrello to arrive at the back post and convert from close range to put the result beyond doubt.
The victory not only secured progression to the Round of 16 but also provided Wanderers members with their first competitive look at several new faces.
Defenders Germán Ferreyra and Panashe Madanha, alongside Liam Gillion and goalscorer Di Pizio, all made their official club debuts, each producing encouraging performances and offering positive signs as Talay’s new-look squad continues to take shape.
With a clean sheet, two well-worked goals and safe passage into the next round secured, the Wanderers will now turn their attention to the Round of 16 as preparations for the new campaign continue to gather momentum.
