Wanderers promote Bonetig on two-year scholarship deal

Western Sydney Wanderers FC are very proud to announce the promotion of defender Alex Bonetig on a two-year scholarship deal.

Originally from Shellharbour, Bonetig has made the trip from down South to the Wanderers Academy since 2016.

The towering central defender has been a stalwart in the Academy system, known for his dependability and hard-work ethic.

Bonetig’s younger brother, Liam, is also a central defender and currently plays in the Wanderers Academy U20s squad.

Bonetig said the scholarship deal was a dream come true.

“I think all the hard work over how many years at this club, this was my dream to become a professional footballer. Then to be even able to sit on the sidelines (against Macarthur in the final match of the A-Leagues season) was a big step forward,” said Bonetig.

“As a centreback, I’m tall and quick. Obviously, the A-League is a step up in terms of quality so that took a bit of time to adjust.

“This NPL season I’ve done quite well. Head coach Mark Rudan has obviously seen that and given me the opportunity. I was training with the A-League team for around three weeks, and then on did well and received a scholarship.”
