Wanderers ready to take rivalry to Campbelltown after five-goal statement

Western Sydney Wanderers will look to carry the momentum of their emphatic 5-2 victory over reigning Champions Auckland FC into Saturday night’s Local Rivalry clash against Macarthur FC at Campbelltown Sports Stadium.

Fresh from a five-goal performance in their first home match of the 2026/27 A-League Men season, Ufuk Talay’s side will head into Matchweek 3 full of confidence as they prepare for another fiercely contested encounter against their Western Sydney rivals.

The Red & Black produced an impressive attacking display against Auckland FC last weekend, recovering from an early setback to score five goals through captain Brandon Borrello, Liam Gillion, Nicolas Milanović, Miguel Di Pizio and Atiya Waraga.

It was a performance that showcased the attacking freedom, resilience and determination Talay has been working to instil in his squad, with the Wanderers controlling large periods of the contest and demonstrating their ability to respond when challenged.

After opening their campaign with a hard-fought goalless Sydney Derby, the Wanderers have continued to build on their new identity, combining defensive discipline with an increasingly dangerous attacking presence.

Their five-goal haul against Auckland marked the first time the club had scored five goals at home since October 2023, while the victory also ended a four-match winless run against the New Zealand outfit.

Now, attention turns to Campbelltown and an opportunity to build further momentum against familiar opposition.

Macarthur FC enter the contest having most recently fought back to secure a 1-1 draw against Newcastle Jets at McDonald Jones Stadium.

The Bulls found themselves trailing after just five minutes following Xavier Bertoncello’s early strike, but head coach Sasa Ognenovski’s second-half substitutions proved decisive.

Musa Touré made an immediate impact from the bench, finding the equaliser just a minute after his introduction following a swift attacking move involving Ryan Fraser.

The result highlighted Macarthur’s ability to remain competitive despite falling behind, with the Bulls having already recovered four points from losing positions this season.

It sets the stage for an intriguing contest between two sides who demonstrated their fighting qualities in Matchweek 2, with both determined to establish themselves in the early stages of the campaign.

For the Wanderers, the attacking combinations beginning to develop under Talay will once again be a key focus.

Captain Borrello opened his goalscoring account for the season against Auckland, while Gillion continued his promising start to life in Red & Black with a clinical finish just moments after the half-time restart.

Milanović, Di Pizio and Waraga also found the scoresheet, highlighting the attacking depth available to Talay as his side continues to grow in confidence.

Midfielder Dylan Scicluna was another influential figure, playing an important role in the build-up to two goals, while the contributions of substitutes Aydan Hammond and Waraga reinforced the competition for places within the squad.

With five different goalscorers contributing to last weekend’s victory, the Wanderers will be looking to maintain that attacking unpredictability against a Macarthur side that has shown its own resilience in recent weeks.

Beyond the three points, Saturday night’s fixture carries the added intensity of a Local Rivalry.

With Western Sydney pride on the line, the Red & Black will be determined to deliver another performance that reflects the character, ambition and fearless approach they have shown in the opening weeks of the season.

Having made a statement at Wanderland, the challenge now is to take that same energy on the road.
