Wanderers return to regional NSW with camp in Forbes

The Wanderers Liberty A-League squad will travel to Forbes this week for a camp and pre-season friendly against Canberra United.

The match will see new head coach Kat Smith and her Wanderers side in Forbes promoting and supporting the rapid growth of women’s football in the regional area with a festival of football ending with a pre-season fixture against Canberra United on Saturday night.

The pre-season clash will mark the first in Smith’s preparations in the run-up to the Liberty A-League season commencing on 26 November against Newcastle Jets.

Western Sydney Wanderers CEO Scott Hudson praised Forbes District Soccer Club and Forbes Shire Council’s ongoing support of women’s football.

“I’d firstly like to take this opportunity to thank Forbes District Soccer Club and Forbes Shire Council for their incredible support of not only women’s football at a grassroots level but also an elite level,” said Hudson.

“It is very important for us to ensure we have a lasting footprint in regional areas and together with Canberra United, we look forward to leaving an impact through our work in the community as well as the pre-season fixture.”

Forbes District Soccer Association Club Secretary said he was proud to host the match between the Wanderers and Canberra United.

“Forbes District Soccer Club and Forbes Shire Council supported by Football NSW and other local sponsors are very excited to host a pre-season women’s game between National giants, Western Sydney Wanderers and Canberra United,” said McKenzie.

“This Flagship Football event presents a fantastic opportunity to showcase the central west town of Forbes together with regional hospitality and friendship.

“Forbes has become a sporting hub for women’s football development and sports tourism with a recent gala day involving over eighty teams and 5000 people resulting a massive economic injection to the local economy.

“It is anticipated this A-Leagues game will achieve more with national and international players mixing with aspiring young football girls.”
