Wanderers smash Newcastle

The Wanderers have moved off the bottom of the A-League Women’s table in stunning fashion thanks to a 4-1 win over Newcastle.

They may have fallen behind early on, but their response was superb as they scored four unanswered goals to win their second game on the bounce.

Fresh off a 2-1 win over high flying Brisbane last week, interim boss Geoff Abrahams kept the lineup unchanged, meaning match winner Holly Caspers was on the bench once again.

The Jets put the Wanderers under pressure early and scored through Natasha Prior, who was on hand to tap home from close range after a shot came off the post.

Western Sydney slowly grew into the game, with Olivia Price having a couple of good efforts on goal, with one blocked and the other going just wide.

They kept pushing, and had an equaliser in the 28th minute thanks to a wonderful solo effort from Bronte Trew.

The left winger, who kept her place in the starting side, received a Danika Matos pass and sped off down the left wing; despite being under pressure from a defender she lashed an effort into the roof of the net.

It was her first ever A-League goal, and another Wanderers would have her first goal for the club just before halftime, and it was a stunner.

Ena Harada dispossessed a Jets defender 25 yards from goal and hit a simply brilliant strike into the far corner, giving ‘keeper Danielle Krzyzaniak no chance.

It was a deserved lead at the break for the Wanderers, who recovered well and were now asserting their dominance on the game.

They almost had another straight away in the second half, but Sienna Saveska scuffed a shot from a Trew cutback.

For a big chunk of the second half there were not many chances created by either side as the Wanderers decided to sit in and slow the game down a touch, but three substitutes would help kick the game up a gear for the Red and Black.

Millie Bennett came off the bench and soon broke in behind the defensive line and was fouled by Libby Copus-Brown, with the referee deciding contact happened in the box, giving the Wanderers a penalty.

Captain Amy Harrison stepped up and duly converted from the spot to give her side an important two goal cushion, and from there it was one way traffic.

Another substitute Talia Younis had several great chances to score her first ever goal for the club, but she was denied by three great stops from Krzyzaniak, but the Wanderers wouldn’t be denied as fourth.

And the super sub from the win over Brisbane made her mark again.

Holly Caspers used her speed to get away from defenders and she poked the ball past Krzyzaniak and into the goal after it rolled in via the post.

It’s the third time this season the Wanderers have scored four, and more importantly it sees them shoot up to ninth on the table, ahead of their crosstown rivals as well as the Jets.

After a season of little luck, a young Wanderers side are beginning to build momentum, and will look to continue the run after the international break when they travel to face Central Coast.
