The Western Sydney Wanderers went toe-to-toe with English Premier League giants Chelsea on Tuesday night, producing an exhilarating attacking display before ultimately falling 6-4 in a memorable Sydney Super Cup encounter at Accor Stadium.
In front of a passionate Red & Black crowd, Ufuk Talay’s side held the lead three times and matched one of world football’s biggest clubs blow for blow in an entertaining contest that showcased the fearless football beginning to take shape under the Wanderers Head Coach.
It took Chelsea just seven minutes to edge in front when Dastan Satpaev raced onto a through ball before finishing past Jordan Holmes, but the Wanderers responded exactly as the home crowd demanded.
Brandon Borrello’s flicked header from a corner found Anthony Pantazopoulos arriving at the back post, with the defender guiding home the equaliser to ignite the Wanderers faithful.
The Red & Black continued to grow into the contest and deservedly moved ahead in the 32nd minute through a superbly worked team goal. Alex Gersbach combined brilliantly with Aydan Hammond down the left before the midfielder calmly stepped inside his defender and swept his finish into the bottom corner.
Chelsea found a response before the break through Dario Essugo, leaving the sides locked at 2-2 heading into half-time after an entertaining opening 45 minutes.
The second half brought another special moment for the Wanderers as Nicolas Milanovic made his return in Red & Black colours following his move back to the club during the off-season, receiving a warm reception from the Wanderers supporters.
The hosts continued to ask questions after the restart, with Atiya Waraga forcing a smart save before the Wanderers reclaimed the lead just moments later.
A fortunate ricochet from Brandon Borrello fell kindly to Dylan Scicluna on the edge of the area and the midfielder showed tremendous composure to round his defender before slotting home to make it 3-2.
Chelsea responded with a flurry of substitutions that introduced several international stars, including Cole Palmer, Jamie Gittens, João Pedro and Estêvão, and the visitors quickly levelled through Gittens.
The Wanderers refused to back down.
After Ricky Fransen came agonisingly close to restoring the lead with a powerful header, it was teenage striker Awan Lual who delivered another memorable moment. Released by Jarrod Carluccio, the exciting young forward calmly finished to send the Wanderers back in front for a third time and cap another impressive cameo from one of the Club’s brightest emerging talents.
Chelsea eventually found another gear in the closing stages as João Pedro struck three times inside the final 10 minutes to complete his hat-trick and hand the Premier League side victory in a thrilling contest.
Despite the result, there was plenty for the Wanderers to take from an encouraging performance against elite opposition.
The Red & Black showed attacking intent throughout the night, scored four goals against one of Europe’s biggest clubs and gave supporters an exciting glimpse of the football beginning to develop under Talay ahead of the 2026/27 Isuzu UTE A-League season.
Attention now turns back to competitive action, with the Wanderers set to discover their Australia Cup Round of 16 opponents in Thursday night’s draw before continuing preparations for the new campaign.
