Williams inspires Wanderers

US star Lynn Williams has scored her first goal as the Wanderers maintained their unbeaten start to the Westfield W-League season with a 1-1 draw with Melbourne Victory at the La Trobe City Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Going into the game with three wins from their first three games, the Red & Black were given an early test of their resolve, going down a goal after just eight minutes.

However, Williams, who had yet another strong game, struck in the 61st minute to level the scores and set the scene for a frenetic finish from the visitors.

But, try as they may, the Wanderers just could not find the luck to grab the winner as they pressed forward time and time again.

Kristen Hamilton was desperately unlucky in the 92nd minute when her effort struck the post before there was chaos in the Victory penalty area with the ball bouncing around before it was eventually cleared.

Despite the early setback, Dean Heffernan’s side stuck to their principles of playing attractive, attacking football and were unlucky not to have squared up the game by half-time.

Victory were fortunate goalkeeper Casey Dumont was in top form as she was forced to make saves of Erica Halloway (10th minute), Amy Harrison (19th) and Kyra Cooney-Cross (23rd).

The Wanderers were full of intent early in the second half and it was no surprise when Williams latched on to a long pass from Alex Huynh to put away her effort with aplomb on 61 minutes.

Williams and Hamilton combined six minutes later with Hamilton sending her shot over the bar.

The Wanderers will now have a week off before they get ready for their match-of-the-season against Sydney FC.
