NPL Review: Western Sydney Wanderers v Manly United

A Connor Rose goal in the second half saw the Wanderers NPL NSW side fall to a narrow 1-0
defeat at home to Manly United.

In a tight and evenly fought match, the Wanderers were unable to make their chances count
despite controlling the ball for much of the game.

The boys started with intent as they were keen to put an end to their winless run, and they
almost scored after four minutes when Luke Nieuwenhof’s shot from distance was spilled by
Levi Kaye, though the Manly keeper was alert to save the follow up from Kaan Nizam.

Luka Knezevic was the next player to have a chance after a swift counter-attack, but he was
unable to control his effort that went high and wide of the goal.
He went closer with his next attempt from a volley, and it only went narrowly wide of the goal.
The rest of the first half was a gritty affair with no big chances for either side, though the game opened up after the break.

Phil Gigliotti sent in a few dangerous crosses that needed to be cleared by the Manly defence,
whilst Wanderers goalkeeper Tristan Vidackovic made a great save to deny Rose.
Unfortunately just after the hour mark Rose would not be denied, as he scored with a shot from very close range to put Manly in front.

The Wanderers pushed hard for an equaliser, with Gigliotti going close from a header and
Marcus Fernandez narrowly missing the target after a corner fell to him at the back stick, but the Wanderers couldn’t find the important goal to get a share of the points.

The Wanderers are on the road next week as they face St George City
