The Western Sydney Wanderers NPL 1 side were left to rue a second-half comeback from APIA Leichhardt, falling 5-3 in an entertaining contest at Wanderers Football Park.
The Red & Black made an energetic start and were rewarded after 15 minutes when Jesse Cameron opened the scoring with a composed finish after creating space inside the penalty area. The early goal reflected the Wanderers’ positiveintent as they looked to take the game to one of the competition’s leading sides.
APIA responded midway through the opening half to draw level, but the Wanderers refused to let the setback disrupt their momentum. Awan Lual restored the advantage shortly after, capitalising on a defensive error before adding his second goal just five minutes later with another clinical finish to give the hosts a deserved 3-1 lead.
The visitors found a way back into the contest just before the interval through an unfortunate own goal, leaving theWanderers with a one-goal advantage heading into the sheds despite an impressive first-half display.
The second half proved to be a tightly contested affair, with both sides searching for the next breakthrough. APIA levelled the scores from the penalty spot before edging in front with 15 minutes remaining as the momentum shifted in the visitors’ favour.
Despite falling behind, the Wanderers continued to attack with purpose and looked to force their way back into the contest. The Red & Black created several promising moments in the closing stages but were unable to find the finishing touch, before a late penalty sealed the result for APIA.
While the final score was a disappointing one, there were plenty of positives to take from the performance. TheWanderers showcased their attacking quality throughout the afternoon, with Pavlovic and Lual leading the way in the final third, while the side’s willingness to play on the front foot created a number of dangerous opportunities against one of theleague’s benchmark teams.
The performance was another encouraging step in the development of a young Wanderers squad that continues to growwith each outing. Their resilience, attacking ambition and ability to compete with the competition’s top sides remain strong foundations as the season enters its closing stages.
The Wanderers will now shift their focus to next week’s fixture as they aim to respond with another strong performanceand return to winning ways in the National Premier Leagues NSW.
