Western Sydney Wanderers FC have today confirmed the return of former Wanderers Academy midfielder Mohamed Al-Taay on a one and a half year Isuzu UTE A-League deal.
Al-Taay joined the Wanderers in the second year of the club’s Academy in 2016 where he played for a number of seasons before earning a scholarship contract during the 2019/20 pre-season.
The Western Sydney local departed the club in June 2021 and went on to sign for A-Leagues side Newcastle Jets the following season where he featured in close to 30 matches over two seasons.
Following the Jets, Al-Taay made his most recent move to Wellington Phoenix where he played another two seasons in 36 matches for the New Zealand side.
Head coach Alen Stajcic said was delighted to bring Mohamed back to Western Sydney.
“Great to bring another Wanderers product back home,” said Stajcic.
“With his international exposure combined with A-Leagues experience we are bringing in a key player that will contribute to the team.”
Mohamed Al-Taay said he was eager to help the team in any way possible.
“It feels amazing to be back home at the Wanderers, I am honoured,” said Al-Taay.
“I know the responsibility it takes to represent the badge and area, and I am hungry to do everything I can everyday to make fans proud and repay the favour shown in me from the coaching staff.
“Since I’ve left the club, as a footballer and a person, I’ve gained a lot of experience and learnt a lot from playing in the A-League and representing my country in FIFA World Cup Qualifiers.
“My goal is to help the team in every way possible and make an impact when given the chance to show my ability and I aim to also help Iraq qualify for the World Cup.”
