NPL 1 Women’s Preview: UNSW v Wanderers

The Wanderers NPL 1 Women’s side travel to The Village Green to take on UNSW in a must-win game as we begin to inch closer to the end of the season.

The Wanderers travel across town to Kensington to take on UNSW at the Village Green in what looks to be a must-win game for the Red & Black as we begin to head into the back end of the season.

The Wanderers come into this game in twelfth place, and following the abandoned postponement of their game against APIA Leichhardt having been left at 1-1, the need to win becomes even more prominent, as a failure to win this weekend could officially drag the Wanderers into a relegation battle.

UNSW are currently sitting in eighth, and after a patch run of form will look to make a statement following a disappointing 3-0 loss to the Macarthur Rams last weekend.

The last time the two sides faced off was in Round 6, where a miraculous comeback saw UNSW walk away with a point in an exciting 3-3 draw. Marcella Santos bagged the equaliser deep into added time.

The Key Decider: The Momentum Swing

UNSW’s run of form has been inconsistently consistent, but the main stay in their last month of football has been dealing with momentum swings in game. Their games against the Rams and Bulls FC indicate that when they concede first, they have struggled to work themselves back into the game.

Alternately, their game against APIA suggested that when they do get a hold of momentum they are able to capitalise and put the game away. So their challenge will be whether they’re able to get on the front foot against a team that starts fast and aims to overwhelm opponents in the first twenty minutes.

The Wanderers main objective will be holding on to a lead if they are to score first, as they have previously let leads slip in the closing stages of the games, leaving them questioning where it all went wrong.

Ultimately, the team that makes the most out of their momentum will likely come away with the victory as both teams will search for form leading into the back end of the season.

This game looks to be an exciting end to end game between two teams who will give it their all to walk away with all three points.
