As the Wanderers gear up for the new Isuzu UTE A-League season, the arrival of Angus Thurgate signals a bold statement of intent.

A product of the Newcastle Jets Academy, Thurgate made his A-Leagues debut as a teenager and quickly established himself as one of the competition’s most reliable young talents.

After six seasons in Newcastle, he moved to Western United, where he became a key figure in their midfield and was recognised with the Player of the Season Award at the conclusion of the 2024/25 campaign.

His impact at United, combining defensive steel with attacking composure, made him one of the most sought-after midfielders in the league.

Speaking about joining the Wanderers, Thurgate highlighted the qualities he hopes to bring to the squad this season.

“I pride myself on my work ethic and resilience, so bringing that to the team and adding that base again in the midfield. Hopefully, it allows the boys to continue on and add another level,” said Thurgate to 10 News Sydney.

Thurgate admits that choosing his next club was a pivotal decision but the Wanderers’ ambition and style drew him immediately.

“It’s not every day you get told you need to find a new club ASAP,” explained Thurgate.

“I saw the back-end of last season how dominant they were (the Wanderers) and how unlucky they were come Finals time.

“It’s a great opportunity for me.”

The Wanderers midfield is stacked this season, with the eventual return of Dylan Scicluna from a long-term ACL injury, alongside stalwarts Josh Brillante and Steven Ugarkovic.

Thurgate is confident that the blend of talent, depth and adaptability will create something special at the Red & Black this season.

“There’s a little bit of an adaptation to make, but I think we’re all working to the same goal. In my mind, we can get it working.”

With Thurgate’s arrival, the Wanderers midfield now combines experience, creativity, and resilience, providing the perfect foundation for the club to make a serious statement in the upcoming season.

Members and fans can expect a dynamic, hard-working, and exciting unit ready to drive the team forward and Thurgate is determined to be at the heart of it all.
