After a challenging start to the season, the Wanderers are heading into Saturday night’s Isuzu UTE A-League clash against Newcastle Jets at CommBank Stadium.
A hard-fought 1-0 win over Melbourne Victory last weekend has given the squad a much-needed boost, and defender Alex Gersbach is confident the side can build on that momentum at home.
The win in Melbourne wasn’t the most elegant performance, but it was exactly the kind of result the Wanderers needed.
It marked a return to form for the defence, which held firm against a competitive Victory side, and offered the players a reminder of what they can achieve when they grind out results.
Gersbach says the victory has set the tone for the week and the team is approaching the clash against the Jets with a clear focus.
“It was a tough win in Melbourne, but it was really important for us,” Gersbach said.
“Probably not the prettiest performance, but three points on the road are exactly what we needed. It’s nice that we were able to grind it out with a solid defensive display and come away with the points. That lifts the spirits and gives us momentum heading into this weekend.”

The Wanderers have worked hard in training this week, sharpening their tactics and preparing for a Jets side known for quick, attacking football.
Gersbach says the team is focused, aware of the challenges ahead, but ready to respond.
“The week of training has been good,” he said.
“We’re focused on getting the win at home and making sure we can build on that confidence. It’s been a tough period, but three points are ultimately the most important thing, and we’re determined to keep moving forward.”

Gersbach has also been steadily regaining match fitness after an injury that kept him sidelined through late December and early January.
While frustratingly timed, he says the period has only strengthened his resolve.
“I’m feeling good this week on the training pitch,” he said.
“It’s only been a couple of weeks since I got back into full training, but I feel much better than last week. Now it’s all about building match fitness and making sure I can stay fit for the rest of the season. I want to be available for as many games as possible and contribute to the team in every way I can.”
As for the Jets, Gersbach says the Wanderers know what to expect from a side that likes to play quick, technical football, and they’ve been preparing accordingly.
“We know their threats,” he said.
“They’re going to play quick and try to play some nice football. We’ve been watching video and working on the training pitch to make sure we can nullify that. It should be a good matchup, and we’re excited for the challenge.”
With Gersbach back and the squad buoyed by a hard-earned road win, the Wanderers are determined to keep building momentum as the season enters a critical stage.
Saturday night promises an engaging contest for the members and fans at CommBank Stadium, who will be hoping to see their side continue the push toward consistent results.
