The Philippines kicked off their AFC Women’s Asian Cup Australia 2026™ Group A campaign on Sunday with a hard-fought 1-0 defeat to hosts Australia at Perth Stadium.
Despite the loss, the team showed organisation and resilience against a dominant Matildas side returning Sam Kerr to the lineup.
Kerr marked her return from an 18-month absence with the decisive goal in the 14th minute, finishing off a slick move involving Caitlin Foord and Clare Wheeler.
Australia controlled the match from start to finish, creating multiple opportunities, but the Philippines defence, led by captain Chandler McDaniel, remained composed under pressure.
The visitors had their moments to counter, but goalkeeper Olivia McDaniel and the backline repeatedly kept Australia at bay.
Several chances, including efforts from Emily van Egmond, Hayley Raso, and Steph Catley, were either blocked or narrowly missed, leaving the scoreline at a tight 1-0.
Wanderer Janae De Fazio, while not featuring in the match, was part of the travelling Philippines squad, gaining valuable exposure to the tournament environment and remaining involved in preparations as the team looks ahead.
The Philippines face a tough next challenge against Korea Republic on Thursday, while Australia will take on Islamic Republic of Iran in Gold Coast, aiming to build on their opening victory and maintain momentum in the hunt for a second AFC Women’s Asian Cup title.
