Match Preview: Sydney Derby

The biggest match of the season has arrived.

The Western Sydney Wanderers return to CommBank Stadium this Saturday 11 April for the final Sydney Derby of the campaign, with pride, passion and bragging rights all on the line.

There is nothing quite like a Derby in Wanderland and with the season reaching its defining moments, the stakes could not be higher.

The Wanderers will be looking for a response after a tough outing against Melbourne City FC, where a 3-0 result didn’t reflect the attacking intent shown early. Chances came, pressure was applied, but moments proved costly.

With lessons learned and a home crowd behind them, the Red & Black will be determined to turn that frustration into fuel on Saturday night.

Sydney FC, meanwhile, arrive off the back of a goalless draw with Brisbane Roar FC in what was a stop-start contest.

Despite flashes going forward, they were unable to find a breakthrough, relying on their goalkeeper to secure a point on the road. With a new era beginning under Patrick Kisnorbo, they too will be searching for a statement performance.

But form often goes out the window in a Derby.

This is a fixture built on intensity, emotion and moments — and it’s the Wanderers who will look to harness the energy of a packed home crowd to make a statement. Every tackle, every run, every goal carries more weight when it’s Sydney v Sydney.

With everything to play for and the season nearing its climax, there is no bigger stage.

This is more than a match.
This is the Sydney Derby.
