Wanderers reward Joeys captain Savic

Western Sydney Wanderers FC have continued their commitment to developing the next generation of talent, with defender Marcus Savic committing his future to the Red & Black on a two-year deal.

The 17-year-old centre back has earned the opportunity following his progression through the club’s football program, continuing a journey that began in grassroots football and has seen him develop into one of the Wanderers’ most promising young defenders.

Savic’s football journey started at Moorebank Sports Club under the guidance of his father before continuing at Marconi Stallions and Football Tec. His development eventually led him to the Wanderers, where he has continued to grow both on and off the pitch.

A composed left-footed centre back, Savic has built a reputation for his maturity, leadership and willingness to learn. His qualities were recognised on the international stage when he captained the Subway Joeys at the recent ASEAN U17 Boys Championship, further highlighting his standing as one of Australia’s most promising young defenders.

For Savic, the opportunity to continue his journey with the Wanderers is a moment that reflects years of hard work and support from those closest to him.

“My biggest influences on the field are my teammates. They helped me go through tough times.

“Off the field, I’d say definitely my family, my mum and my dad, my biggest supporters, and also my grandfather, who recently passed away.”

Savic described the opportunity as a dream come true and remains focused on continuing his development within the club’s environment.

“It’s a big opportunity and big pleasure to sign my first professional contract at a massive club. It’s a dream come true.

“And goals in mind obviously to make my A-League debut if not soon, and to just keep playing for the badge.”

Having spent a significant period of his football development at the Wanderers, Savic believes the club’s commitment to young players is creating opportunities for the next generation.

“Being at the club for such a long time of my football career determines me a lot, and obviously from the club.

“It shows that they have trust in the young footballers. And I’m looking forward to learning from the older players and get more experience in the older age groups.”

Western Sydney Wanderers Football Director Mal Impiombato said Savic’s signing was a reflection of both his development and character.

“Marcus is a talented young defender who has shown consistent growth throughout his time in our football program,” said Impiombato.

“As a left-footed centre back, he possesses qualities that are highly valued in the modern game, but what has impressed us most is his attitude, leadership and willingness to learn. His recent role as captain of the Joeys is a reflection of the respect he has earned from coaches and teammates alike.

“He has worked hard for this opportunity and we are excited to continue supporting his development as part of the next generation of Wanderers players.”
