NPL Women’s NSW Preview: Wanderers v Bulls FC Academy

The Western Sydney Wanderers NPL Women’s side returns to Wanderers Football Park on Sunday evening for a blockbuster encounter against league leaders Bulls FC Academy.

With the race for the finals and Premiership intensifying, both sides have plenty to play for heading into Round 22.

The Wanderers remain well placed to secure a finals berth but will be looking to rediscover their best form after a difficult stretch. The Red & Black have managed just one win in the past month and enter Sunday’s clash following a narrow 1-0 midweek defeat to Macarthur Rams, a result they’ll be eager to respond to in front of their home supporters.

Standing in their way is a Bulls FC Academy side that has set the benchmark throughout the campaign. Unbeaten since Round 4, the league leaders have established themselves as the competition’s most consistent outfit and another victory would further strengthen their grip on top spot while eliminating one of the chasing teams from Premiership contention.

The Bulls’ attacking prowess has been a defining feature of their campaign, with the side scoring an impressive 52 goals. Their threat has come from all over the park, with 14 different players finding the back of the net this season.Amber Luchtmeijer and former Wanderer Olivia Vanderlaan have led the way, both reaching double figures as the Bulls continue their push towards a second consecutive Premiership.

The Wanderers know they’ll need to produce one of their strongest performances of the season to halt the visitors’ momentum, with three valuable points on offer against the competition’s form side.

The Key Decider: Defensive Organisation

Containing the Bulls’ free-flowing attack will be the Wanderers’ biggest challenge. The visitors have consistently found goals from multiple sources throughout the season, making them difficult to shut down over 90 minutes.

For the Wanderers, defensive organisation and taking their chances in transition will be crucial. If the Red & Black can frustrate the league leaders early and capitalise on their own attacking opportunities, they’ll give themselves every chance of claiming a statement victory.
