Gersbach: Time for Wanderers to turn words into action

Western Sydney Wanderers vice-captain Alex Gersbach believes a renewed sense of identity and direction has laid the foundations for a new chapter in the Red & Black, but insists the time for talking is over as the club prepares to kick off its 2026/27 Isuzu UTE A-League campaign.

After an off-season defined by significant change across the football department and playing squad, the Wanderers enter the new season with a fresh outlook under head coach Ufuk Talay and Football Director Mal Impiombato.

For Gersbach, who has been named one of the club’s vice-captains alongside Germán Ferreyra, the transformation has brought a greater sense of clarity and purpose to a playing group determined to make its mark.

Speaking on Network 10’s Tonight: The Weekly Kick-Off, the experienced defender acknowledged the importance of turning the optimism surrounding the new campaign into performances on the pitch.

“I’ve been talking a fair bit in the build-up and I think now we’ve got to stop talking, get on the pitch and get the work done,” Gersbach said.

The appointment of Talay has been central to that shift, with the new head coach implementing a defined football philosophy and clear expectations throughout pre-season.

For Gersbach, that structure represents an important step forward following two challenging campaigns in which consistency proved difficult to find.

“Uffy’s been a big change this pre-season. I think the change is that we’re going to have a clear structure and clear style of play,” he said.

“Which we’ve sort of struggled with over the last two seasons. We had that run where we did well for the back end of the previous season before last year, but then last year we sort of got a little stuck and couldn’t get our way out of it.”

It is a candid assessment from one of the Wanderers’ newly appointed leaders, reflecting both an understanding of the challenges that have come before and a determination to help drive the club forward.

With a refreshed squad, a new football leadership structure and a full pre-season under Talay, the Wanderers have worked to establish the foundations for a more consistent and recognisable identity.

Gersbach believes those changes extend well beyond the training pitch.

“This year, we have clear principles and a clear identity. That’s off the pitch as well with Mal coming in as football director,” he said.

“But we can talk all we like, but we need to get on the pitch and get results.”

That message carries additional weight as Gersbach steps into his new role as vice-captain, forming part of a leadership group tasked with setting standards and helping establish the culture of the new-look Wanderers.

With the opening Sydney Derby against Sydney FC at Allianz Stadium providing an immediate test, the Wanderers have an opportunity to put their pre-season work into practice on one of the biggest stages in Australian football.

For Gersbach and his teammates, the challenge is clear. The foundations have been laid, the direction has been set and now comes the opportunity to deliver where it matters most.
